Kamini Sharma consumed poison on Monday afternoon and was rushed to the hospital by her family, where doctors declared her dead. On Tuesday, police recovered a video from the phone of Kamini's aunt in which the teenager could be heard blaming her neighbour and alleged lover, Akash, saying his refusal to marry her and his family's opposition to their relationship had pushed her to take the extreme step. In the video, Kamini is heard apologising to her mother, calling her "the best mother in the world". She said she did not want to die but felt compelled to do so as Akash and his family were unwilling to accept their relationship. Following the incident, an FIR was registered under BNS Section 108 (abetment of suicide) and Akash was taken into custody, SP Hathras Chiranjeevi Sinha said. Police said Kamini and the accused had been in a relationship for around four years.
