There is a distinction between a 'single mother' and an 'unwed mother'. A 'single mother' would be formerly in a committed relationship, but is now widowed, broken up (in the case of a common law marriage), or divorced. An 'unwed mother' is a knocked up, sexually promiscuous shrew. Though neither is desirable, a 'single mother' would still rank above an 'unwed mother' within the hierarchy.
