Since President Trump's order in August, the National Guard has been patrolling the streets of Washington D.C. in an effort to reduce the city's crime rates. CBS News Senior White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang says people living in or visiting D.C. see guardsmen every day near public parks and around public transit stops, particularly at the corner of 17th and I Street NW, which is a major hub for the metro, where the shooting of two guardsmen unfolded on Wednesday. "The White House and officials who I've talked with say they are closely monitoring the situation. They do not want to talk about the politics of why the National Guard is here," Jiang reported.

I mean, NPR spoke with a number of National Guard members from Ohio on the condition of anonymity, and they talked to them just the other day, November 10, and they talked about the deployment to various cities, including D.C. One said, this is not what I signed up for. Three of them declined voluntary deployments, and they were deeply uncomfortable with what they were doing. Has it been tense with the National Guard around?” Tom Manger: “So, it has not been tense as far as the public and the National Guard, but I think it's it really is no secret that many of the national Guard's folks, National Guard folks, don't understand what the purpose of their being there is. I know that I'll have quick interactions with them when I see them occasionally. And, you know, they'll – they'll roll their eyes. They'll – you know, one of them said that he thought it was a waste of time. And so, I – and I think they – they understood at first when they were deployed there with all the other federal resources. But then so many of the federal resources have been pulled back out of D.C. and yet, the National Guard has stayed there. And they're staying at – at first, it was the touristy spots. You saw them down near the museums and the monuments along the mall, and then it seemed like they that they were deployed to many of the downtown subway metro stations. And so, I know that – I don't – I don't feel like there's tension with the public and the National Guard or with their presence. But I do think that that that many of them wonder why they're there, why they're there, what their purpose is and how long they're going to be there. Last week, a federal judge ruled the trump administration's deployment of the National Guard in D.C. was unlawful, arguing it lacks authority and is violating the District of Columbia's sovereign powers, under the Home Rule Act. I didn't get to talk to him, but I didn't get to, you know, know who he was. But it seemed like he suggested that somebody went up and started shooting at the National Guard." "One National Guard was lying on his side. They were rendering aid to him. He wasn't moving, but he was on his side. And then I looked at the the other National Guard member that was down, and I saw compressions going on. I, you know, it was -- it was a lot of people around there. So I don't think it was the person that had done the shooting. And all I could tell you is that I identified two National Guard members that were being worked on. The facts all show this is NOT true: - The only one who officially requested assistance from the National Guard was mayor Bowser. She was granted 340 soldiers before the event and 1100 during it. - There were no official requests or offers from Trump. The DC national guard is run by the Pentagon, and therefore, the President. Trump could have deployed them if he gave an official order, which there is NO record of. - Donald Trump’s own defense secretary, who is part of the chain of command for National Guard troop requests, testified UNDER OATH, that Trump had never signed an order to deploy National Guard troops to the Capitol. - MAGA ally, Kash Patel claimed Trump ordered the national guard. Colorado Judge Wallace found that Kash Patel is “not a credible witness”. - Chief Sund, Capitol Police Officer, says he requested assistance six times ahead of and during the attack on the Capitol. Each of those requests was denied or delayed. - US Secret Service assistant director Tony Ornato told the committee in January 2022 he overheard conversation between Mark Meadows and DC Mayor Bowers that the President had approved 10,000 National Guard troops for January 6th Rally. The problem is that this is hearsay and Trump NEVER officially called up the National guard. There would be evidence that he did. Cheney will be remembered as a courageous woman who put America over Trump.
