So believe in Allah and His messengers and do not say, ‘Three.’ Stop—it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is only One God. Glory be to Him! He is far above having a son.” [Qur’an 4:171] Notice something extremely important: the very same verse that calls Jesus “His Word” also says that he is a Messenger of Allah, then explicitly tells people not to say “Three,” declares that Allah is One God, and declares Him far above having a son. So how can you take the words “His Word” from the verse while leaving aside the rest of the very same verse, which explains the Qur’an’s teaching about Jesus? Being a Word from Allah does not mean that Jesus is part of Allah or that Jesus is the Creator. The Qur’an itself explains the creation of Jesus: “Indeed, the example of Jesus in the sight of Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust, then said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was.” [Qur’an 3:59] Jesus was created by Allah’s command, “Be,” without a father. If being created without a father made someone God, then Adam would have an even greater claim to that argument, because Adam was created without either a father or a mother—yet no one says that Adam is God. Then you say: “Jesus is alive and Muhammad died, so whom should I follow?” But being alive or dead is neither the criterion of divinity nor the criterion for the truth of a prophet’s message. The Qur’an says to Muhammad ﷺ: “Indeed, you will die, and indeed, they will die.” [Qur’an 39:30] And it says: “Muhammad is no more than a messenger; other messengers have passed away before him.” [Qur’an 3:144] The death of a messenger does not invalidate his message. Abraham, Moses, and other prophets died. Does their death mean that their messages were false? As for your use of this verse: “If you are in doubt concerning what We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Scripture before you. The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord, so never be among the doubters.” [Qur’an 10:94] The verse does not say: “If you doubt the Qur’an, abandon it and follow the Bible.” Nor does it say that the Bible in your hands is the authority by which the Qur’an must be judged. Look at the end of the verse itself: “The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord.” And the very next verse says: “And do not be among those who deny the signs of Allah, or you will be among the losers.” [Qur’an 10:95] The Qur’an also says that it was revealed confirming the previous revelation and as an authority over it: “And We have revealed to you the Book in truth, confirming what came before it of the Scripture and as an authority over it.” [Qur’an 5:48] The Qur’an does not leave the identity of Jesus ambiguous. Jesus himself says in the Qur’an: “Indeed, I am a servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.” [Qur’an 19:30] And he says: “Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is the Straight Path.” [Qur’an 3:51] Even the miracles of Jesus are not presented by the Qur’an as an independent power belonging to Jesus. Rather, Jesus says: “And I give life to the dead—by Allah’s permission.” [Qur’an 3:49] As for saying that you do not want to be a “servant of God” and instead want to be a “child of God,” we must distinguish between emotion and evidence.
