The hot take right now is: 𝘼𝙄 𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣. But inside Microsoft , we are actually dealing with a much harder design question…

I’m an AI designer on Copilot, and an artist. Both lenses shape how I read what we’re building and how we are moving into 𝙢𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙡-𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 and 𝘼𝙄-𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙨. Our Chief Design Officer, @designjon , published the new design system behind Copilot. I walked through it in the video, sharing how Copilot is designed around human cognition through 4 layers:

❶ Presence: Humans think continuously. But software is fragmented. Context should move with you. ❷ Memory: Chat as a memory layer, not just a chatbot. ❸ Attention: Copilot meeting people at the right level of cognition, at the right moment. ❹ Shared Awareness: Microsoft created a very interesting new pattern called Throw & Catch: Copilot subtly moves with your thinking and attention, as your real thought partner.

Highly recommend reading the article from Jon @MicrosoftDesign :

@Microsoft Can I compliment on the sound design? That was a real massage for the ears...

@Microsoft haha you r so nice

@Microsoft Thank you for liking my Dev Day post that I posted earlier. I made a new post, I had to verify the email. It is real 🤩

@Microsoft Hahha

@Microsoft I know right lol . I was like wait, is this real? Let me check the verification of the email.

@Microsoft Yes exactly!! "Let context move with you" And, "which AI surface should be active, and which one should fade into the background" These are the ideas I can't stop thinking about. The context window itself is a design surface, and our new job as designers is to design for it!
