The ideologically-captured TTC Board were clearly irritated and uncomfortable with my deputation. Most remained preoccupied with their phones and laptops while I articulated the harsh realities about the transit system they are entrusted to care for. The average salary of those in the room exceeded $200K per year, including... Joe Mihevc, a “consultant” who has several lucrative contracts with the City. No Board member had any comments or questions for me and were eager to see me leave the room. The Chair was especially displeased with my remarks. FYI - the TTC has a costly “diversity department” and “truth and reconciliation action plan.” I’m not sure how either are related to their operating mandate of delivering a safe, reliable, and efficient transit system.show more

I was able to access the detention centre where 37 young men died in NSCDC custody. The room was tiny, with barely any ventilation, and I could smell the bodies of those who had died. A survivor told me how they drank their own urine and sweat just to survive, and how officials ignored their cries for help. The government says investigations are ongoing to establish what happened.

I was on the way over to the Navy Yard Metro stop to talk about transit safety when my team informed me a police officer was stabbed in the face. Horrible. My thoughts are with his family and we pray for his speedy recovery. These acts of senseless violence are exactly why U.S. Department of Transportation is fighting to re-secure our transit systems and crack down on violent crime. Tomorrow I’ll be meeting with Metro Forward’s CEO and plan to address this as well as any other questions you all have.

Some employees of a catering company is making a marketing video for their mobile catering business. They had gotten permission from the manager of the parking lot they were in. In the middle of the video, a woman comes and demands that they leave, that they will attract animals, and then proceeds to dump their food all over the ground. She happens to be a board member at the at the local country club they were pitching their marketing for. Seeing how she treats people, should she be removed as a board member or should she be charged for destroying their food?

Yesterday, we traveled to one of the main detention centers in Mariona, El Salvador, but unsurprisingly, access was denied. A prison guard confirmed that nobody has been allowed to enter any of the detention centers, not even family members. They also confirmed that detainees are not allowed to make sporadic phone calls to their family members. We also met with victims of human rights abuses, including several men who were detained for over a year under the exception regime, and who still have other family members inside the prisons. They were fishermen, peasants, ordinary and hardworking individuals who were taken by the police and thrown in prison without any proper hearings, access to their lawyers or their families, and who shared with us the torture and inhumane conditions they suffered and witnessed in the different detention centers they were held in. While we formally requested access to CECOT, where ten of our Venezuelan clients are detained, and to the Centro Industrial Penitenciario in Santa Ana, where Kilmar Abrego Garcia is detained, the Salvadorian authorities have not responded to our requests.

I was able to recover a few videos and photos from my life in Gaza. This one ripped my heart to pieces. It is a beautiful memory with my son Kinan, who was just nine months old. I had just come home from work and he was waiting for me at the door, sitting in his baby walker. The way my children greeted me every day after work erased every trace of stress and exhaustion. I watch the video over and over, taking in every detail. I see the floor tiles and remember how many times we struggled to choose them, how many stores we visited searching for the most beautiful, the best. Those days were tiring, but they were full of joy. I see the living room curtains in the background, the couch, and I think of how perfect they were. My home was beautiful. I chose everything with care, the best and the most beautiful for that home. Now I have nothing from that video. Not my clothes. Not my child’s clothes. Not his walker. Not the couch. Not the curtains. Not the tiles. Nothing. All I have left is the ache of longing for my home.

On Friday night, I learned that the Deputy Attorney General’s office had directed the department’s Security and Emergency Planning Service to send two armed Special Deputy U.S. Marshals to my home to serve me with a letter. The letter was to be served between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. that night. I was in the car with my husband and my parents—who are sitting behind me today—when I got the news that the officers were on their way to my house, where my teenage child was home alone. Fortunately, due to the grace of a very decent person who understood how upsetting this would be, I was able to confirm receipt of the letter via email, and the deputies were called off. At no point did Mr. Blanche’s staff pick up the phone and call me before they sent armed deputies to my home. The letter was a warning to me about the risks of testifying here today. But I am here, because I will not be bullied into concealing the ongoing corruption and abuse of power at the Department of Justice.
