Israel has been working to oust Palestinians from the South Hebron Hills for many years. Efforts intensified after October 2023, and since then, hundreds of organized attacks against local Palestinian residents and shepherds have been recorded. In January 2026 alone, more than 200 attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians were documented in villages in the area. Over the course of this time, settlers invaded Palestinian-owned farmland and killed two local residents. Settler militias operate as an informal arm of the state: armed with military-issued weapons and riding ATVs and horses, they invade communities under the protection of military forces, who either turn a blind eye to the violence or take an active part in it. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced sanctions today against Israeli settlers, following a rash of attacks and actions fomented by the settlers in recent weeks in the West Bank. Export and import controls will be placed on goods originating from Israeli settlements that they deem to be illegal. Companies that supply and aid in the construction of settlements will also fall under these sanctions.

With or without official authorisation, if settlers move onto this now “public land” and work it for 10 years, it may be allocated to them. For this reason, settlers work hard to prevent Palestinians from accessing their agricultural lands. And “luckily” for them, the IDF is always there to help. Another land-grab strategy, used alongside the first, involves extending settlements’ “security zones” onto Palestinian agricultural lands. As settlements pop up or expand, so do their “security buffer zones.” These zones, referred to as “sterile” in IDF jargon, are areas near settlements that Palestinians are barred from entering without the IDF’s permission, even when they privately own the land in question.
