Standard vaudeville shtick
When I was a kid the Marx films occasionally showed up on local TV. I loved them but was struck by strange pauses in the dialogue. About 50 years ago, Duck Soup was re-released to large theaters, and I found out the pauses were perfectly timed for audiences laughter. Genius.
