But today, it’s helping tear our society apart. In the real world, speech has limits. You can’t threaten violence or spread harm without consequences and you shouldn’t be able to do it online either. Over the past 30 years, the internet has gone from a luxury to a necessity, and social media has turned from an experiment into a massive business. These companies shouldn’t enjoy blanket immunity while their platforms spread threats, violence, and hate. It’s time for Congress to update Section 230 and hold social media companies accountable for keeping dangerous content off their platforms, just like we expect responsibility and accountability everywhere else.
