It is an Asiatic lion. The belly fold is a distinctive trait. These were the lions in the Roman colosseum. All wiped out except in India, where conservation is widely successful. It is one of the few places tiger populations increase. Lot of inbreeding in the Gir lions from a small surviving population, so they are sickly with sparse manes. Also, the large maned lions were selectively hunted, so the ones left aren’t as majestic. This is also true for elephants in Sri Lanka. Less than 7% of male elephants are tusked as they were shot, compared to 45% in North India, and 95% in South India. Tuskers are imported from India for Sri Lankan cultural festivals.
