The EU funded a €2.8m sustainable mobility project on Italy's Tuscan coast. It promised electric bicycles, scooters, shuttle buses and boats for tourists and residents. However, according to the European Public Prosecutor's Office, much of the equipment was left unused and abandoned. And investigators allege around 70% of the budget went to personnel costs, including expenses unrelated to the project. Contracts were also reportedly awarded to connected companies, which invoiced inflated consultancy fees. Six people have now been indicted. The public was promised a zero-emission transport network. What it received was abandoned vehicles, inflated consulting bills and a fraud prosecution.
