Longyearbyen, its main settlement, supports scientific research and tourism. The sun doesn’t rise in Svalbard during winter (late October to mid-February) due to its Arctic Circle location. The Earth's axial tilt causes the North Pole to face away from the sun, leading to continuous darkness. In summer, Svalbard experiences the Midnight Sun, with 24-hour daylight.
