After leaving Horch Motorwagenwerke AG in East Germany, August Horch founded another factory in 1909, which was also to build automobiles. Since Horch was not allowed to use his own name as the company name again, he made do by translating his name into Latin (horch = AUDI).

The word "Horch" in German means "listen". It's bit of a slang. When the company Horch folded, it's inventor founded a new company called "Audi" which is latin for - you guessed it - "listen" or "I'm listening". :) So Horch and Audi are closely related...
