The largest econ YouTube influencer, Economics Explained, peddles sensational doomerism to sustain vitality. But worse, in their pitch to attract sponsors, he lies claiming to be an "esteemed econ professor." If econ is a "junk science", why do these guys flout fake econ titles?

we are back live here at- wait, what’s this? it’s.. it’s.. BY GAWD IT’S CRISTOPHER CLARKE WITH A STEEL CHAIR

Doomer slop gets clicks

In this video he claims economists can just make up econometric models to prove their priors. Total bs and just undermines trust in expertise.

His videos are just essays with a stock video playing in the background. Sometimes his theses are right, sometimes they aren’t. Him describing himself as esteemed bothered you enough to make a video? Weird…

Um, it wasn't the "esteemed" per se. It was more claiming he has a certain job that he never did. Again, I hope I'm clear, I'm very welcoming of diverse viewpoints, but I have no acceptance of dishonesty. It's only through honest disagreements that we can solve our problems.

Wow, I didn’t realize he wasn’t a professor at all, that’s wild. I assume it must have been someone with Lunar X that lazily AI generated those bullet points and put them online. Hopefully they realize the error. Good video, kudos for creating discourse

That is a possibility. But also, that's pretty lazy. Like, he's the host. You find out somebody's CV pretty quick in any relationship like that.

206 thousand views in 7 hours? Dear word that's a lot of bovine excrement being shoveled into the discourse.

It's now over 600k!

I think a few years I decided to never watch him when I saw that he didn’t really cite anything in his videos or descriptions

"Esteemed professor" for someone who has no evidence of being on at all is wild work.

That channel has always just rubbed me the wrong way.

Excellent point re the contradiction.

Econ is a junk science because it is mainly based on Keynesianism, which recommends excessive borrowing. They stole econ in the '40s and '50s, when the Long March Through the Institutions started.

Keynes advocated for a cyclically balanced budget. Deficits only for recessions, austerity for boom periods.

Perhaps so. But Austrian econ is far better, since it actually works.

@EconChrisClarke Lmao you clearly don't understand what are you talking about. If didn't even know what Keynes even said. And also think than Modern Economics Orthodoxy is dictated only by what Keynes said ages ago.

@EconChrisClarke Austrian econ is scientific, Keynesian is fraudulent and based on the economics of the Third Reich. I really don't know what you are talking about, but several people have noticed the same as me, like Antony Davies.

Went to follow you and my jaw dropped when I saw your location lmao.

Go cougs!

They're right. Mainstream economics is a junk science. RIP Bozo

What's up with all these people selling their channels and turning to shit?

Vertitasium sold his channel and it still makes very high quality content. By selling, it injects more investment into it.

The NYT often misinforms people on matters of Economics. It is a successful newspaper. Would it be a good thing for it to receive even more investment so that it could publish even more bollocks about economics? I'd say that depends on what we mean by "good". Maybe the misinformation it produces is not that damaging, maybe the utility that the entertainment or other psychological effects it produces on its readers more than pay off for it. But let's be clear about it: the NYT often contains factual errors. It's highly unlikely that those errors are a consequence of lack of investment. It's not difficult to imagine that if the NYT received more investment, it would hire more staff in order to put out bad content at higher repetition. It is my understanding that this was essentially what the investment in Veritasium consisted of. The content used to be produced by a single author, but now that task is handled by a team.

Are you aware of any increase in inaccuracies at vertitasium? It's a little outside of my domain, but it all seems pretty great still.

I'm not a scientist and shouldn't make a sweeping judgment, but a couple of videos left a very bad impression on me, in particular one about glyphosates. This reddit thread has some criticism:

(Maybe this isn't the exact video I watched, but it has the same problems).

Economics Explained: hates the free market, pushes doomerism and keynesianism. John Maynard Keynes, the founder of Keynesian economics, famously used the phrase "naughty Jew boy" in a writing describing Albert Einstein.

The economy has been crashing approximately once per decade since 1820, and the people who control the creation and distribution of ideas tell us that it is always a fluke.

Tell me your model where you can predict a financial crash before it happens. "Once per decade or so" isn't a very precise model. It's also nothing different than any economist will tell ya.

if you're LSE Fabian, you aren't an economist, you're big govt propagandist and enabler
