I've spent about half my career on the drawing board (lead on vellum, ink on Mylar) & half on CAD. The year I spent using Leroy & other lettering templates was awful. You need to be able to letter freehand with consistent quality (size, line weight, style) to be drawing by hand.

I was in engineering school at the end of board drafting, so I learned how to do it. None of use used lettering guides. We were required to adopt a common block lettering style. This looks like it would have been more clunky to use than just writing carefully.

When I were a young’un, all the old-timers in the office could freehand letter without using the templates due to years of practice.

Its beautiful, but also one of the major reasons CAD was invented. To get the best approximation of it, we need to re-introduce the Pen Plotter - which I dearly would love to see make a return.

Genuine question, can’t we just use a stencil for this, does this kind of tool provide any additional benefit ?

I first used these in 1964 as an apprentice at an Architect's office. The line work was done with nib pens on linen fabric. Dont press to hard or you cut the linen and had to redo the drawing. I dont remember why we didnt use Rapidograph for line work.
