The long division algorithm CAN be understandable rather than just a procedure to memorize. Here's how we can think about it:

Why didn’t they tell me this when I was in the 5th grade?? Thank you!! 🙌🤗❤️

I teach it this way with base 10 blocks, doing the two side by side. 🙂 I like the money idea too!

✔️. Teach the concept of “regrouping” from the start w/ addition & subtraction before students ever get to multiplication & division instead of the terms “carry” & “borrow”. Hands-on materials instead of memorizing procedures! Teach for understanding. Concrete before abstract.

Genius 🙌

When I explain division, I don't tell people to 'bring down' the number. Instead, I would point out that when we gave each person 1 $100 bill, we gave away $300.

This is so clear! Can’t wait to share it with my son who’s learning long division right now. Thank you!!
I worked in my field for 20 years before I went to grad school. I was amazed at how much I didn't know. I learned my knowledge was limited and with few exceptions our base of knowledge can be expanded. We say "lifetime learning" but do we truly understand what it means?

love this explanation!

I would add that it is equal sharing and not just sharing. We are sharing 432 using direct place value into 3 equal groups and after we are done we know each group is 144.

I don't need this now Howie, you've taught me partial quotients 🤣I just need to practise pq's and given I'm nearly 61 I am literally a dog learning a new trick. This explanation on Long Division is excellent btw.
