A Belfast business owner is calling for clarity on how traders are expected to operate during the Fleadh, after Belfast City Council announced that there could be more than a week of city‑wide road closures. The city will host the all‑Ireland Fleadh for the first time this summer, with over 800,000 visitors expected to attend gigs, competitions and workshops from Sunday 2 to Sunday 9 August.

💥⚠️WATCH Belfast fuel protest: “Every day is a struggle. I had to do something. I can’t sit on my hands.” 🎥🎤Chief Reporter James reporting and speaking to a farmer taking part in the protest in Belfast on the Sydenham Bypass near Belfast City Airport. 🚜Sam Hanna is a dairy farmer from Ballygowan. He says he is struggling to make a living with rising costs. He wants things to “change right from the top to the bottom.” Makes clear he did not know who was organising the protests, but says he felt it was important to be there and take part. Also says how no roads were blocked, and that this was taken into consideration for emergency vehicles. He apologises for the disruption, but wants people to be thinking about the issue. The disruption in Belfast comes after similar demonstrations in the Republic of Ireland disrupted fuel supplies, port operations, and traffic in city centres and on motorways for a week. First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly BL last week wrote to Prime Minister Keir Starmer urging him to bring forward a package of support measures for people here. Health Minister Mike Nesbitt said he would be concerned if roads were blocked. He said: “Just engage in legitimate, legal protest. “Today, as is the case every day, there will be well over 100,000 engagements or interactions between the HSC and the public.”

By now you may have seen the horrific video coming out of Belfast. We all have to be careful not to incite trouble or violence, but let’s be honest. These things are simply no longer acceptable in our societies. It seems the men of Northern Ireland have had enough and there is talk of mass protests and the complete closing down of Belfast at 7pm tonight…and inevitably there will be trouble. If it happens in Northern Ireland there is every chance it will happen in Ireland as well. What has been done to those countries from a % demographics basis is horrendous, and quite frankly I’m surprised it has been tolerated for so long. All of our nations feel at breaking point and events in Northern Ireland tonight might be indicative of what’s to come 😢

#HighSurf - Watch when a rogue wave hits the beach at the end of Seward Ave in the City of Ventura. This occurred during the high surf advisory at high tide. Because of this wave eight people were transported to local hospitals. Currently the beaches are closed in Ventura County and so is the Ventura Pier. This fight between two women happened in front of shocked shoppers in Southend High Street. The incident took place in the middle of the day and further highlights continued issues with anti-social behaviour in the city centre. An eyewitness told Your Southend that the women had allegedly "been arguing about drugs". Southend has a Community Safety Partnership (CSP) which share responsibility of tackling crime and disorder, anti-social behaviour plus drug and alcohol related offending. It's a multi-agency team including Southend City Council's Community Safety Unit, Youth Offending Service, Drug and Alcohol team, Essex Police, Essex County Fire & Rescue Service, the Office of Police and Crime Commissioner, South Essex Homes, the National Probation Service and Health Services. There is a team of Community Safety Officers who are responsible for providing high visibility patrols in the city centre to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour and other issues.

⭕️Magdala Street Belfast City Council = 24 surveys issued on Magdala Street. They got 1 response, and it was a yes. That was then recorded as just 4% support for Irish language street signage. What they don’t mention is the other 23 houses simply did not respond but those non-responses are effectively being used to suppress the true level of support. My figures = I went door to door on Magdala Street myself. 24 surveys, 12 said yes, 5 could not properly answer due to language barriers, and 7 did not answer the door. That means every response I got from the residents who could clearly engage with the question expressed support. This is now the second Belfast City Council survey I’ve personally checked and found to be misleading. The problem is not lack of support for the Irish language, it’s a survey process that treats lack of engagement as lack of demand. I will keep doing this until it is acknowledged. Gordon Lyons MLA
