The "magic" of physics

Man is playing a Rubens' tube, also known as a flame tube or standing wave flame tube. It is a physics experiment that visually demonstrates standing wave patterns and resonance phenomena, typically for acoustic waves. HERE IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT :: The tube is filled with a flammable gas and has small holes along the top where the gas can escape and be lit to form a row of small flames. When sound waves are produced at one end of the tube (by the person, an attached speaker, or a device), the pressure variations due to the sound waves affect the flow rate of the gas at each hole. This causes the height of the flames to vary with the pressure changes. Nodes (areas with minimal movement) in the standing wave correspond to lower flame heights, and antinodes (areas with maximum movement) correspond to higher flames. When the frequency of the sound wave matches one of the natural frequencies of the tube (which depends on the length of the tube and the speed of sound in the gas within it), resonance occurs, and a clear standing wave pattern is visible by the flames. This experiment is a captivating way to visualize the relationship between sound waves and the physical space in which they resonate.

🪄 But there is definitely something special about physics. Physics can seem like magic, but it's actually just a deep understanding of the world around us.

My favourite physics quote - "The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself."
