Messi had only announced his retirement once before yesterday and that was in 2016 which was after he felt he had let the team down when he missed the penalty in the Copa America final. That was born out of the feeling that he had let his friends and family down by not being enough and that was at 28 or 29years old. That is very different from someone who has refused to retire at 41years old to give others a chance or to even see what the team would look like without him. No one would have told Ronaldo to retire at 29 or even 35 but at 41? Come on man. Knowing when to bow out is as important if not more important than the journey itself. It didn’t end well at Madrid, didn’t end well at Juve, didn’t end well at United (2nd coming) and now it’s looking that way for the one place that should have been untouchable. You all can go on to defend it but it’s just sad, really.
