the matrix plot only makes sense if there is no Ai and it just a massive hive mind of people. Their world was destroyed, or they settled alien worlds and didnt want to do the terraforming. So they end up living in virtual worlds. then see those virtual worlds as real. and the idea of seeing any other world is unacceptable. the way actual social matrixes work in real life.
