It’s a temple, it’s sacred, and it’s a national monument. It shouldn’t be hosting nightclub evenings. You wouldn’t go to a sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand or somewhere like it and expect it to hold a clubbing event. It’s disrespectful to the religion, and to our culture.

St Paul’s is a consecrated Christian cathedral—not a nightclub or playground for secular entertainment. Sacred music, hymns and worship belong there; nightclub-promoted events do not. The cathedral authorities made this disgraceful decision, but Sadiq Khan publicly celebrated it. Khan is a poor excuse for a mayor. Instead of promoting music ventures in sacred buildings, he should concentrate on tackling knife crime, robbery and the fear ordinary Londoners face on their streets. Protect our churches. Respect our Christian heritage. Sort out London’s crime.

Another “rave in the nave” took place in Canterbury Cathedral this evening — on the Feast of the Assumption. The “silent disco” of 80s music had two sessions running from 6.30pm to midnight. It has preserved the nearly thousand-year-old atmosphere of this place better than any of the others. And now, with the power outages, they switch on the electric lights less often, light more candles, and let the sun’s rays stream through the windows into the cathedral -- just as the Byzantine architects intended in their time.
