How the Tallest Building Stands on Sand: The Burj Khalifa is built on deep layers of sand and rock. Engineers drilled 192 reinforced concrete piles deep into the ground. The piles transfer the building's enormous weight into stronger layers below. A huge reinforced concrete raft connects the piles and spreads the load. Engineers also designed the foundation to handle settlement and wind forces. The foundation was extensively tested before construction continued upward. The secret isn't making the sand stronger, it's designing a foundation that safely transfers the building's weight through it.
