This stunning Figoni et Falaschi-bodied cabriolet was built to represent France at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, an exposition promoted with the slogan “Dawn of a New Day”. While the engine was not completed in time for its display, the modernity and sublime beauty of this car’s flowing styling drew throngs of admirers from the press and public alike. Emile Delahaye was born in Tours, France in 1843. He studied engineering in Angers, France. In 1869 he began work with his engineering degree in applied arts and crafts. Emile Delahaye began business in Tours, France in the middle of 19th Century for the purpose of constructing engines for the ceramic industry. The company branched out and began constructing mechanical appliances such as pumps and engines. In 1888, Delahaye designed an internal combustion engine for the shipping industry. It was not until 1896 that Automobile production began for Delahaye. His first automobiles produced were powered by belt-driven single and twin cylinder engines. Emile used motor racing to promote his vehicles. In 1896, Emile Delahaye entered the Paris-Marseilles race. Not only did he enter a vehicle his company had created, but he entered as the driver. It took four years of negotiation, but Peter Mullin and Jim Hull eventually purchased the car in 1985 and spearheaded its restoration. The original engine sheel was tracked back to Count Hubertus von Doenhoff and bought. New engine internals were created from original drawings to finally give the 165 the fully-working engine it was intended to have. You have to be extremely careful with 13-pin gears, especially Nigeria-used ones. This was when I was sourcing another SUV for a friend. The transmission was smooth; however, I noticed it jerks in park and reverse. I already had an idea of what was wrong, but the dealers said it was the driveshaft. I laughed to myself. I told my mechanic to open the bonnet and count the wires connected to the gear, and lo and behold, the 13-pin gear had been converted to 10-pin. I just closed the bonnet and left. 🤗😅

What if you could visualise how electricity flows from a wind farm in Scotland to your home in London? Ok it's not quite that simple, but it got me thinking that there must be a way of visualising the complexity of the electricity transmission grid in Great Britain. This is my first attempt… What you're seeing are the real power lines and substations on the transmission grid using OpenStreetMap data. The real connections between each substation are found using PyPSA-Eur as well as calculating the "electrical distance" or impedance between each substation. This is my incredibly basic and naive way of attempting to show the "speed" at which the energy is moving through the network, where the bottlenecks are, etc. I know it's not as simple as this, but it's a first attempt so… 😉 I've also added a way to pick any substation in the network and show how electricity pulses through the rest of the network from that point. This is the magic sauce that really brings to life how much infrastructure electricity has to pass through to get from point A to point B. Of course this isn't really what happens, and there's no demand to soak up the energy. However I think it still serves as an interesting visual of how complex the network actually is and the distances involved to get energy from one side of the country to the other. What do you think?
