On May 12, 1944, B-17 Flying Fortress 42-102452 was lost over Germany not to enemy fire, but to a tragic mid-air collision. During a mission near Frankfurt, intense attacks by German fighters forced the heavy bombers into sharp evasive maneuvers. In the chaos, aircraft 42-102452 collided with another B-17, serial number 42-97382. The impact instantly destroyed the lower nose section of the plane, killing the navigator and the bombardier. Only a thin strip of aluminum kept the tail from breaking off completely. The vertical stabilizer was shredded. By all rights, she should have tumbled out of the sky. But she didn’t. Pilot Lt.
