You Are Not the Body or the Mind: You Are the Witness of the Three States of Experience All our experience happens in one of three states of experience: the waking state, the dream state, and the deep, dreamless sleep state. In the waking state (which is what you’re in now, as you read this), you are aware of and identify with your body and mind. In the dream state, you lose all awareness of your body and you stop identifying with it, yet you remain aware of and identified with your mind, immersed in the dreams that it creates. In the deep, dreamless sleep state, you lose awareness of both your body and mind, as the mind enters into what in Sanskrit is called laya—a state of dissolution. When you wake, you regain awareness of your body and mind and you take them to be who you are. But this is a mistake. You are neither the body nor the mind—you are the ātmā, the avasthā traya sākṣī. Avasthā traya sākṣī means the witness (sākṣī) of the three states (avasthā traya). It is the unchanging consciousness, that remains constant through all three states as their experiencer. This unchanging consciousness is who you ACTUALLY are. Vedānta teaches that you mistake your body and your mind for who you are because of avidyā. Often translated as “ignorance,” avidyā should not be taken as an insult—avidyā simply means lacking vidyā (knowledge) of your true self as the ātmā, the avasthā traya sākṣī. This avidyā, which we are all born with, is the root cause of the ātmā remaining in saṃsāra (the repeated cycle of birth and death). Yet this avidyā can be dispelled through ātmā-vidyā, the knowledge of the self, which is exactly what Vedānta teaches us to set us free from this cycle.

Centuries later, Nietzsche said almost the same thing, his idea of “eternal recurrence.” If you had to live this day again and again, would you be proud of it, or terrified that you’re still choosing the same life? And even modern physics keeps stumbling toward the same shape, cyclic universe models, Big Bangs followed by cosmic “bounces,” universe after universe rising from the ashes of the last. Once you see this, your own life starts making a different kind of sense. You stop blaming fate and start noticing your habits. You stop praying for a new life while living the old one on autopilot. Because you’re not trapped in a cycle. You’re participating in one. So ask yourself, What keeps returning because you haven’t faced it yet? What pattern keeps knocking like a teacher you ignore? “There are only two religions on earth” Interesting take.. In both scenarios the true essence of ascending from oneself or one’s life is through the process of becoming closer to that which is greater than self. Either by mirroring God through your life or by removing the ego in the present moment to shift your consciousness in such a way that you share the same space with the Creator. In both of these scenarios there starts with the belief or faith that there is a something greater than “I” or self. It is a way of being, a path taken. It is not “religion” or “books” that save us, these are only guides or guardrails. But it is within our own being the ability to ascend, or create that relationship. Not through good deeds and donating to charity or receipting every Bible verse, but an internal alignment of values, a perspective that seeks Truth, Life and wholeness in ALL things, not for profit or personal gain but because it IS the way of the universe. In both scenarios the true essence of ascending from oneself or one’s life is through the process of becoming closer to that which is greater than self. Either by mirroring God through your life or by removing the ego in the present moment to shift your consciousness in such a way that you share the same space with the Creator. In both of these scenarios there starts with the belief or faith that there is a something greater than “I” or self. It is a way of being, a path taken. It is not “religion” or “books” that save us, these are only guides or guardrails. But it is within our own being the ability to ascend, or create that relationship. Not through good deeds and donating to charity or receipting every Bible verse, but an internal alignment of values, a perspective that seeks Truth, Life and wholeness in ALL things, not for profit or personal gain but because it IS the way of the universe.
