Lunar Module descent stages (~90,000+ lbs) Lower halves of each Apollo lander (left behind on all landing sites) Rovers (~460 lbs total) 3 battery-powered vehicles from Apollo 15, Apollo 16, Apollo 17 Scientific equipment (~20,000+ lbs) Experiments, seismometers, reflectors, and instrument packages (ALSEP) Flags, tools, cameras, and misc gear (a few thousand lbs) Includes boots, shovels, film cameras, golf balls, etc. Discarded packaging & life-support waste (~200+ lbs) Food containers, wipes, and 96 bags of human waste Crash debris (~250,000+ lbs) Spent rocket stages and impact probes intentionally crashed on the Moon Other items (small but notable)Memorial plaque and medallions Personal items (photos, a fallen astronaut tribute) Experiments like mirrors still used for laser ranging Bottom line: Most mass = hardware (landers + crashed stages) Actual “trash” = very small percentage
