Such total bullshit. The 4 in the PLU code means the apple was “conventionally grown,” meaning pesticides were used. The 9 means it was “organically grown,” meaning the pesticides used were naturally sourced—but many organic pesticides are MORE toxic than synthetic ones. Apples produce their OWN wax, which may be supplemented with additional wax regardless of organic or conventional status. Honestly, the “organic” grift just never ends.

It's a natural wax on apples called Bloom. Straight off the tree it's natural and helps keep moisture in the apple

Wash all fruit and vegetables with warm soapy water and then rinse thoroughly. I believe if it starts with 9, it's organic, which is another issue.

I’ve checked 4 grocery stores where I live. Not one has a label starting with a 9, only 4s.

Its just a grocery store code. Back when cashiers could remeber 4 digit numbers instead of choosing a picture on a touch screen. Produce generally starts with a 4. They put a 9 in front of it if organic.

The 4 is meaningless but he is correct about the 9. All produce starting with a 9 is organic.
