For many immigrant families, the fear of ICE enforcement actions have made it difficult for parents to leave their homes to go to work or take care of their children’s most basic needs. In response, my office coordinated a holiday donation drive to support families impacted by ICE raids. Angelenos came together to collect more than 1,000 toys and essential items. The response is a reminder that this city continues to meet moments of uncertainty with compassion and community. I am deeply grateful to everyone who gave their time and resources to support our immigrant families. Together, we continue to show that Los Angeles stands with dignity and humanity at its core.

Oleh Afanasiev grew up in the "gray zone" - in the village of Hnutove, located between the positions of Ukrainian and Russian forces in Donetsk region. When he was ten years old, Oleh became the main character of the documentary The Distant Barking of Dogs, which was nominated for an Oscar and an Emmy.
