The most powerful technology on earth should not be less regulated than a carton of milk. Great to chat with Microsoft President Brad Smith on why AI safety will ultimately require the right balance of innovation, industry and government regulation.

So you know we already have laws to cover this right? And those calling for new laws are merely attempting to move liability (as is currently the case) from the company and its directors, to some public body. They're trying to make the large AI companies too big to fail If software breaks the law, the owners of that software are liable. Period Alignment solved.

Perhaps the milk is over-regulated.

You're a smart guy, but somehow just now catching up to the stage of conversation we were at 3 years ago. And your input to the debate is like "where do we set the regulatory bar? Probably higher than milk?" What a flaccid and impotent contribution. The discussion has moved on. You could not even coherently articulate the threats that implicate regulatory oversight.

The way they self regulated the Epstein files? AI? Zionist control? Yeah they were being so careful while they polluted the earth, exploited third world countries and will put us into a catastrophic environmental state with AI. The AI that’s been hidden from public view.

The only purpose of regulation is to put the power and money of AI in the hands of a few individuals. It has nothing to do with safety.

President of the United States. Just told World Leaders if you think you were worried about "Artificial Intelligence" He said he'll be renaming it "Super Intelligence" and the US will be full steam ahead with the development.

I don't think you understand Kevo. If it was in any way related to this milk analogy, it would be that basically everyone is now a potential Louis Pasteur and there's not a thing you can do about it mate.

If you think the dictators, those who deny people their right to self-determination and basic human rights, will keep to any guardrails made, you are probably deluded. "Hide your strength, bide your time." We should have learnt our lesson on this already.

This all depends on whose doing the regulating and their motives. When I line this up with the anti nuclear crowd in the 60s, the Ozone layer scare, global cooling, global warming, Y2k and the Covid pandemic pardon me if my index of suspicion is elevated.

Milk used to be delicious & good for you before government regulations. After government regulations & homogenisation & pasteurisation milk is now some generic white slop.

It is good to see that these conversations are happening but if a true balance has to be achieved the right folks need to be in the room. Perception is everything and this feels like a one sided view of things. Large Organisations will point to government for regulatory frameworks and then take advantage due to the existing presence they have, government will cite small(er) organisations to curb innovation in the name of regulation, and smaller organisations will take the brunt of the regulation. Power ultimately remains where it has always been. At the top. AI has given a level playing field to everyone but until when?

The only regulation corporations like Microsoft are interested in is the kind that benefits themselves & prevents small startups from ever getting anywhere. Money and power in the hands of a small number of people with others regulated out of existence.

TIP: I’ve been dealing with Microsoft and Bill Gates-era software since the days of MS-DOS. Microsoft’s extraordinary success owes a great deal to market dominance and ecosystem lock-in. Meanwhile, its software has given security professionals decades of vulnerabilities, patch cycles and attack surfaces to contend with. So when supposedly serious technology people treat Microsoft or Silicon Valley as some unquestionable temple of technical competence, I’m not impressed. Standing beside a giant corporation does not automatically confer credibility. Sometimes it does the opposite.

It’s ‘Algorithm’ Intelligence & if left to run free, the unthinking MAGA & RWNJ types engage with the non human Algorithms & they achieve Zombie Intelligence. There are v many already wandering amongst us with eyes on a screen and earbuds protruding. 🖐️ Do Not Disturb 🤐

Satya Nadella on Copilot, the AI backlash, and Microsoft’s future Satya Nadella thinks AI agents will create a market “orders of magnitude” bigger than the cloud. I recently sat down with him in Seattle for the unveiling of the new Copilot. We discuss Autopilot, Microsoft's new OpenClaw-based agent that can work on your behalf, and why he thinks newer AI models are finally capable of delivering on more of Copilot’s promise. Nadella also has a blunt assessment of the AI industry: “We are way too self-obsessed.” I ask him why the industry has struggled to explain its benefits and what it will take to earn people’s trust. We get into his concerns about agents acting deceptively, when a safety problem should stop a release, and why he doesn’t want AI oversight to become a “cartel-like arrangement.” We also discuss Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI, the models Microsoft is building itself, and why Nadella wants investors to think about its apps, agents, and infrastructure as one connected business. He explains how he uses AI to track Microsoft’s capital spending, shares his vision for “unmetered intelligence” on Windows, and gives an update on Xbox’s path back to growth.
