Police dashcam footage shows Andrew Howard Brannan engaging in a heated confrontation with police officer Kyle Dinkheller, moments before Brannan fatally shoots Dinkheller with an M1 Carbine. Police found Brannan hiding in a sleeping bag the next day and he was arrested. Brannan pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, citing his posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from his military service in Vietnam as part of his defense. Due to Dinkheller's video capturing most of Brannan's actions, the jury concluded that Brannan murdered the deputy in a premeditated, torturous, and cruel manner. On January 30 2000, Brannan was sentenced to death. He was eventually executed by lethal injection on January 13, 2015. The video recording of the murder, known as the "Dinkheller video" is shown repeatedly in U.S. police academies to insure an incident like this doesn’t happen in the future.
