Police found Brannan hiding in a sleeping bag the next day and he was arrested. Brannan pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, citing his posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from his military service in Vietnam as part of his defense. Due to Dinkheller's video capturing most of Brannan's actions, the jury concluded that Brannan murdered the deputy in a premeditated, torturous, and cruel manner. On January 30 2000, Brannan was sentenced to death. He was eventually executed by lethal injection on January 13, 2015.
