The NFL is socialist but i have to spend $180/month on 7 different streaming platforms just to watch the games? What idiots. The NFL is a capitalist corporation. They simply share profits and give higher picks to bad teams to create stability so franchises don’t go extinct.

Are we just going to ignore barriers to entry here? There are only 32 franchises in the NFL. You can’t compare that to Walmart, Target, or Amazon without acknowledging economies of scale and open-market competition. The analogy breaks immediately.

Rosenberg was cooking and Ebro kept throwing in side commentary. It still works but Ebro almost ruined it.

And, instead of paying for their own youth training and recruitment programs, the NFL is subsidized by public schools and universities who do the training for them on the taxpayer’s dime. Socialize the costs and privatize the profits. What a deal!

Not socialist. Profit sharing can exist in capitalism. Workers just gotta share in the risk. Most won’t.

Yes, they are socialists. But only among their very small group of 32 owners. So they, as a group, can be as strong as possible. Outside their local community? “Fuck those guys” For TV partners, players, suppliers, etc: as cut-throat capitalist as it gets.

You’re correct - but the difference in this socialist construct is that every team is populated by the best in their field and everyone is working to be the best in the world. It works because of that fact. You don’t have some middle school bench warmer on the patriots just on the team because. Have to contextualize this.

Socialists are extremely stupid. The NFL is a sports competition where they attempt to control every variable (to arguably include the outcome of games) in competition to stimulate drama for ratings and betting. Socialism fails to achieve positive outcomes 100% of the time. It causes misery and death everywhere its ever been applied. This is a horrible analogy and anyone who thinks its brilliant is retarded.

@Singleterry If the NFL were socialist then: All players of at least the same position would be paid the same All revenues would be shared There would be teams in New Mexico, Oklahoma and Nebraska before they’d double and triple down in FL, NY, CA and TX

Correct. Shared revenue and salary caps

Yes, it’s “socialist” amongst the 30-some owners who benefit from that socialization - but literally everything else is merit based capitalism. This is classic smooth brain framing by finding one small sliver of a framework and then making poor generalizations in dumb glasses.

Ah yes the classic socialist democratic concept of getting a trophy for beating the shit out of all your competitors. So so close yet so far ...

Calling the NFL “socialism” is bad economics. Teams are privately owned by billionaires. Players don’t own the league, they sell labor. Salary caps and drafts don’t redistribute wealth to workers or society, they control labor costs and maintain competitive balance. That’s not socialism. That’s regulated capitalism with cartel-like rules.

What they don't say is they get to choose the people who are apart of the community and kick the people out who don't perform. Plus owners still get to keep more proceeds from home teams

The NFL is a business that has rules for franchises in the same way that McDonald's and Chick-fil-A do. They are quintessential capitalist marketplace competitors. Their competition is not with each other, they're competing in the marketplace for your money.

😂 it’s definitely socialist the average owners make $127 million per year compared to the average player making 5.2 million a year and the average players money isn’t even guaranteed

It's not socialism. It's a cartel. It's classic capitalism. Why don't these guys read a book?

This is retarded. The players would be the workers in this analogy. They do not all share the same pay, or stake in the league. His analogy would put the NFL more in the realm of oligarchy.

Completely disagree here, this is why. Team owners share profit, not players sacrificing their bodies. They are rebranding, they're to get you to go along with the elite owning everything telling you it is socialism. You are still the injured player without healthcare & income

This might be one of the biggest self-owns I’ve seen. The reason the NFL and other businesses often appear to run more efficiently and fairly than governments is because of free market capitalism. Businesses have to constantly adapt and stay competitive or people stop watching and stop buying. The NFL promotes fairness within its league structure because it is a market tool. If fans believe the game lacks integrity or fairness, they tune out. The so-called “socialist” aspects people point to are really just business practices designed to make the product more appealing to consumers. Even the example of Target and Walmart squeezing out smaller businesses is tied to government power. During the pandemic, why were Target and Walmart allowed to stay open while many mom and pop stores were forced to close? Who benefits most from minimum wage laws and other restrictive policies? It is usually the large corporations that can absorb those costs and comply more easily. Smaller businesses struggle under the same rules. That is not proof of socialism working. If anything, it shows how government intervention can tilt the playing field in favor of the biggest players.

It's socialist for 31 people. The workers don't benefit from doing the work. And while the cowboys make the same from TV that the Panthers do, they make 10x on other ad deals and merchandise.

What a joke. The NFL is pretty meritocratic, and the best players make the most money.

Karl 的头像

One of the most retarded arguments I've heard. The NFL is comprised of 32 for-profit business in which the means of production is entirely owned by the ownership. In no way is it socialist just because the individual businesses decided to sign a deal agreeing to share TV profits.

So they do have A point, but it’s not that we should do socialism The big corporations control the laws and the policies, and have murdered small business in its entirety. That’s the issue

Suggesting an entertainment product is analogous to an entire economy is absurd. It’s even more absurd when you consider the teams don’t split their revenue evenly and the players are not paid evenly either. The fact that a bunch of private actors opted into a system where they split certain parts of nationally generated revenue does not make it a socialist construct.
