The cab driver who assaulted a 75-year-old man in Thane — seen in a video that went viral and prompted Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to seek stringent action — was tracked down through a sting operation by Shiv Sena workers who posed as customers seeking a ride. The victim, Sarosh Dastoor, has fractured his right leg and is recovering at Jupiter Hospital. Workers used the vehicle’s registration number to get the car owner’s contact details, then called him pretending to book a cab to Lalbaug in Parel. The owner passed on driver Nishant Shukla’s number. When Shukla was contacted, he agreed to the trip and rode to the designated spot on his motorcycle. Party workers identified and detained him there before handing him over to police. “Using the registration number of the vehicle, we obtained the address and contact details of the car owner. One of our workers called the owner pretending to be a customer seeking a ride to Lalbaug in Parel. The owner then shared Shukla’s mobile number. When contacted, Shukla agreed to take the trip and as he was roaming on his bike in the vicinity, he arrived at the designated location on his motorcycle, assuring that he would be bringing his car. As soon as he reached there, party workers identified and detained him before handing him over to the police,” said local Shiv Sena leader Nitesh Patole, who was among those involved in tracing the accused. Workers from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction were also part of the search. The Vartak Nagar police have charged Shukla under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He has been remanded to two days of police custody. The case was registered on the complaint of a member of the search team, as Dastoor has not personally filed a complaint. Police said his statement has not been recorded yet as he is still recovering physically and emotionally, and will be taken once he is in a better condition. The assault took place near Jupiter Hospital in Thane West around 8 pm on Tuesday, when Dastoor and his wife were on an evening walk outside their residential building. Shukla was allegedly gargling and spitting repeatedly on the road when Dastoor objected. An argument turned violent and Shukla allegedly began abusing and assaulting the senior citizen. The same customer intervened, stopped the fight and took the injured man to Jupiter Hospital in his car as he had sustained injuries to his right leg,” Samanta said. Dastoor and his wife live alone in a housing society near the hospital. A security guard at the building said he had worked there for three years and saw the elderly couple on their evening walks almost every day. Shinde called the Thane Police Commissioner seeking stringent action, including the addition of an attempt to murder charge given the gravity of the offence. We've had no load shedding for over six months and everyone's wondering how the problem got fixed "so quickly" when we've been saddled with load shedding for 17 years 🤯 I'll tell you one thing about Mteto Nyati, he's a really nice guy when you meet him but you can feel the fire in his eyes when he talks about our country and Eskom 🔥 A few weeks ago, I attended the launch of Bruce Whitfield' new book called "The One Thing". Bruce decided to use this precious time to interview Mteto. What struck me most was how seriously Mteto took his role of Eskom Chairman. I know that might sound strange but if you consider how long we all had to endure load shedding, and when you look at how SOE's have been run in general, no wonder everyone is so skeptical. That is, until you hear Mteto speak on the topic and more importantly, you feel the intensity with which he speaks. I guess everyone is wanting to better understand the "secret recipe" that has brought load shedding to an unexpected end. Here's how I understood the process: ✅ Mteto and his fellow board members took the role seriously and therefore, it all started with intent. They also took a few weeks to try understand what the problems were from a first principles perspective. ✅ They decided the biggest issue was the problem statement they inherited. They had to change this before doing any work. Vision and strategy before execution. ✅ Mteto and the board went back to basics. They engaged with government on policy that would allow them to work with original equipment manufacturers, they went out of their way to serve Eskom leaders rather than the other way around, and the stuck to their plan despite the noise. There were many other take-aways from the night but the point is, here we are with no load shedding for six months. By every metric, the turn around has been almost miraculous, except it's not. If you EVER want an example of why leadership matters, look no further than the turnaround at Eskom. It genuinely starts at the top and we should protect leaders like Mteto at all costs. PS. Strike: Wike Approves Over N12bn January Salaries of FCTA Workers, Dismisses Blackmail The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he has just signed January salaries of the FCT Administration workers amounting to over N12bn immediately after the Court ruling, suspending the strike embarked on by the workers. The Minister stated this while addressing journalists in his office after the court ruling. Wike insisted that the government has largely met workers’ legitimate demands despite the ongoing strike. He added that the strike had been hijacked by political interests, forcing the administration to seek legal intervention to prevent a breakdown of order. “I just signed January salaries amounting to over ₦12 billion,” the minister said. “Yet the FCT is entitled to only one per cent of federal revenue. If the Federal Government earns ₦1 trillion, the FCT gets about ₦10 billion. That allocation alone cannot even cover salaries, not to talk of running the administration.” He explained that the government initially chose dialogue and engagement when the strike began, noting that it did not rush to court. “When the strike started, we believed in dialogue. We felt the issues could be resolved through discussion. But when it became clear that politicians have hijacked the strike, we had no choice but to go to court and allow the law to decide,” Wike stated. The minister acknowledged workers’ rights in a democracy but insisted that strike action should always be a last resort. “This is a democracy. Everyone has the right to protest. But if workers made 14 demands and government addressed like 10, there should be room for understanding and patience,” he said. Drawing from his experience as a former governor and local government chairman, Wike said he understood labour struggles but warned against unrealistic demands. “When demands are legitimate, government should acknowledge them. But it is not always possible to implement everything at once. Government does not deny legitimate entitlements, especially wages,” he added. Many of my African friends, and journalists beyond the continent, have been asking me what on earth is happening in Zimbabwe due to a fast moving political story involving President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Vice President, General Constantino Chiwenga. I have put together these videos to tell a long story in a short space of time. There is a factional fight inside ZANUPF, between a faction that supports President Emmerson Mnangagwa and a faction that supports his deputy, Vice President General Constantino Chiwenga. It is about who succeeds President Mnangawa, General Chiwenga or Mnangagwa's heir apparent, Kudakwashe Tagwirei. Constitutional changes were put in place to block Chiwenga and prolong Mnangagwa's term of office. Things came to a head when businessman and tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo, who was very close to the President, died in a helicopter crash on the Wednesday before last. Some time back, Vice President Chiwenga had gone to a meeting of the ZANUPF Politburo, the body of senior officials that runs the party, to complain about a group of businessmen close to the President, accusing them of corruption. Wicknell Chivayo was one of them. Vice President Chiwenga and his inner circle of military men particularly General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe did not attend Chivayo's funeral. Neither did he pass on his condolences, publicly or privately, as far as the media is aware. President Mnangagwa, on the other hand, went to the Chivayo home, passed on his condolences, described Chivayo as a dear friend, and declared him a provincial hero. In Zimbabwe, hero status is decided by the ruling party (read President), which is led by President Mnangagwa. Provincial hero is one step below the highest honour, national hero. Ordinarily, when the President visits the family of someone who has been declared a hero, or someone close to the party, he goes with his vice presidents. If they are not available, they visit before or after him. That did not happen this time. Zimbabwe has two vice presidents, and only Vice President Kembo Mohadi went to pass on condolences after President Mnangagwa's visit. Vice President Chiwenga did not. Last Friday, a Politburo meeting was aborted because of disagreements over what was to be discussed. The war veterans said to support Vice President Chiwenga opposed the changes that were going to be made, and it is reported that the Vice President himself challenged those amendments before the meeting started. The amendments were meant to align ZANUPF's constitution to the country's constitutional amendments that gave the president an extra two years to his term of office among many other changes. On Saturday, the inaugural presidential ball dinner was held in Harare at a church owned by Uebert Angel, an ally of the President. Once again, Vice President Chiwenga did not turn up, a powerful signal that he disagrees with the way things are being run. Before the ball, the President had appointed another businessman very close to him, Kudakwashe Tagwirei, as Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, after separating that portfolio from the Ministry of Finance and making the two stand alone. At the ball, one of the people seated beside President Mnangagwa at the top table was Kudakwashe Tagwirei. At the presidential ball dinner, Patrick Chinamasa, a senior ZANUPF official and former finance minister under both the late President Robert Mugabe and President Emmerson Mnangagwa, presented a prize to Vice President Kembo Mohadi. What he said was instructive. He told the gathering that the prize was being awarded for loyalty to the President. “I want to thank you for your loyalty to the President. It is very important for a Vice President to remain loyal to their leader. I commend you for demonstrating that loyalty, and I thank you very much for it,” he said. For those who read politics, the message was clear. This was not really about Vice President Mohadi. It was a signal that Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is disloyal, while Vice President Mohadi is loyal. Mohadi’s response was telling, he gave a smile and a shy laughter. He understood the message being send. This morning in Harare, as you can see in this video, Tagwirei was formally sworn in as a government minister. Vice President Chiwenga did not attend. Only Vice President Mohadi was there. There is serious disharmony in Zimbabwe's ruling party, and it has never been as bad as it is now. In the past, they would have their arguments and still be seen together in public. That is no longer the case. The centre can't hold. Some might ask why the Vice President would have been expected at the ball. The dinner was raising money for the upcoming ZANUPF conference, which every member of the party leadership must attend. The fact that the Vice President was in the country and still stayed away shows, once again, that there is a problem. Mouthpieces for the different factions have come out with their own explanations, but the fact of the matter is that Zimbabwe is now in a deep leadership crisis because of this. The tragedy is that Zimbabwe has no opposition. Some of it was co-opted, and some of it destroyed itself. At a time when an opposition would be expected to take advantage of the divisions in the ruling party, there is nobody to do so. Zimbabweans are being forced to choose one faction of the ruling party over another. That is the story in a nutshell.

In a shocking case of alleged premeditated murder, a 27-year-old woman was taken into custody by Byadarahalli Police Station police for allegedly burning her boyfriend alive at her residence in Anjananagar on Tuesday afternoon. The victim, Kiran (27), had arrived at the accused Prema’s house around 2 pm after she invited him over. Both were employees at a telecom company (VI) and had been in a relationship for nearly two years. Senior officer told reporters that the accused lured Kiran under the pretext of a “Western-style proposal.” She allegedly blindfolded him, tied his hands and legs to a chair, and reassured him when he questioned the tight restraints, claiming it was part of a trend popular abroad. Former South African president Thabo Mbeki made some serious mistakes during his presidency, and the two glaring ones were HIV and AIDS policy and Zimbabwe. I would also add his failure to properly groom or allow a successor before the 2007 Polokwane conference. But every time I listen to South African leaders speak, he still stands above all the presidents South Africa has had after Nelson Mandela. Mandela was in a league of his own and served a unique historical purpose during a particular era, so I do not even place him in this comparison. But when you compare Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa, I genuinely enjoy listening to Mbeki because his arguments are backed by facts, empirical evidence, research, economic analysis, scholars and international journals. Whether one agrees with him or not, he constructs arguments intellectually. Listening to this discussion in the video reminded me again that he was a great leader who nevertheless had major flaws, and unfortunately those flaws often overshadow many of the positive things he achieved for the South African economy. I mentioned HIV and AIDS. I mentioned Zimbabwe. I mentioned the failure to groom a successor. I also think one of his major mistakes was the refusal to invest adequately in Eskom at the time when warnings were already being raised about future electricity generation problems. But when you then look at the presidencies of Jacob Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa, it becomes a completely different picture. Mbeki’s approach to Zimbabwe was ideological. Zuma, for all his own problems, is probably the only South African president who can genuinely say he at least attempted to engage Zimbabwe politically in a meaningful way. But Ramaphosa’s relationship with Zimbabwe appears deeply compromised by business and political interests, at worst corrupt. And when you assess the three presidencies rationally, especially from an economic management perspective, the figures speak for themselves. South Africa’s economic growth reached around 5% to 6% during parts of the Mbeki era, levels the country has struggled to reach since. The problem today is that many people analyse these leaders emotionally instead of rationally. Economic performance is measured through figures, and those figures are publicly available. So every time I listen to Thabo Mbeki speak, I enjoy listening to him because of the depth, structure and intellectual discipline of the way he makes his arguments.
