The cab driver who assaulted a 75-year-old man in Thane — seen in a video that went viral and prompted Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to seek stringent action — was tracked down through a sting operation by Shiv Sena workers who posed as customers seeking a ride. The victim, Sarosh Dastoor, has fractured his right leg and is recovering at Jupiter Hospital. Workers used the vehicle’s registration number to get the car owner’s contact details, then called him pretending to book a cab to Lalbaug in Parel. The owner passed on driver Nishant Shukla’s number. When Shukla was contacted, he agreed to the trip and rode to the designated spot on his motorcycle. Party workers identified and detained him there before handing him over to police. “Using the registration number of the vehicle, we obtained the address and contact details of the car owner. One of our workers called the owner pretending to be a customer seeking a ride to Lalbaug in Parel. The owner then shared Shukla’s mobile number. When contacted, Shukla agreed to take the trip and as he was roaming on his bike in the vicinity, he arrived at the designated location on his motorcycle, assuring that he would be bringing his car. As soon as he reached there, party workers identified and detained him before handing him over to the police,” said local Shiv Sena leader Nitesh Patole, who was among those involved in tracing the accused. Workers from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction were also part of the search. The Vartak Nagar police have charged Shukla under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He has been remanded to two days of police custody. The case was registered on the complaint of a member of the search team, as Dastoor has not personally filed a complaint. Police said his statement has not been recorded yet as he is still recovering physically and emotionally, and will be taken once he is in a better condition. The assault took place near Jupiter Hospital in Thane West around 8 pm on Tuesday, when Dastoor and his wife were on an evening walk outside their residential building. Shukla was allegedly gargling and spitting repeatedly on the road when Dastoor objected. An argument turned violent and Shukla allegedly began abusing and assaulting the senior citizen. Here's how I understood the process: ✅ Mteto and his fellow board members took the role seriously and therefore, it all started with intent. They also took a few weeks to try understand what the problems were from a first principles perspective. ✅ They decided the biggest issue was the problem statement they inherited. They had to change this before doing any work. Vision and strategy before execution. ✅ Mteto and the board went back to basics. They engaged with government on policy that would allow them to work with original equipment manufacturers, they went out of their way to serve Eskom leaders rather than the other way around, and the stuck to their plan despite the noise. There were many other take-aways from the night but the point is, here we are with no load shedding for six months. By every metric, the turn around has been almost miraculous, except it's not. If you EVER want an example of why leadership matters, look no further than the turnaround at Eskom. It genuinely starts at the top and we should protect leaders like Mteto at all costs. PS. Strike: Wike Approves Over N12bn January Salaries of FCTA Workers, Dismisses Blackmail The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he has just signed January salaries of the FCT Administration workers amounting to over N12bn immediately after the Court ruling, suspending the strike embarked on by the workers. The Minister stated this while addressing journalists in his office after the court ruling. Wike insisted that the government has largely met workers’ legitimate demands despite the ongoing strike. He added that the strike had been hijacked by political interests, forcing the administration to seek legal intervention to prevent a breakdown of order. “I just signed January salaries amounting to over ₦12 billion,” the minister said. “Yet the FCT is entitled to only one per cent of federal revenue. If the Federal Government earns ₦1 trillion, the FCT gets about ₦10 billion. That allocation alone cannot even cover salaries, not to talk of running the administration.” He explained that the government initially chose dialogue and engagement when the strike began, noting that it did not rush to court. “When the strike started, we believed in dialogue. We felt the issues could be resolved through discussion. But when it became clear that politicians have hijacked the strike, we had no choice but to go to court and allow the law to decide,” Wike stated. The minister acknowledged workers’ rights in a democracy but insisted that strike action should always be a last resort. “This is a democracy. Everyone has the right to protest. But if workers made 14 demands and government addressed like 10, there should be room for understanding and patience,” he said. Drawing from his experience as a former governor and local government chairman, Wike said he understood labour struggles but warned against unrealistic demands. “When demands are legitimate, government should acknowledge them. But it is not always possible to implement everything at once. Government does not deny legitimate entitlements, especially wages,” he added. Listening to this discussion in the video reminded me again that he was a great leader who nevertheless had major flaws, and unfortunately those flaws often overshadow many of the positive things he achieved for the South African economy. But Ramaphosa’s relationship with Zimbabwe appears deeply compromised by business and political interests, at worst corrupt. And when you assess the three presidencies rationally, especially from an economic management perspective, the figures speak for themselves. South Africa’s economic growth reached around 5% to 6% during parts of the Mbeki era, levels the country has struggled to reach since. The problem today is that many people analyse these leaders emotionally instead of rationally. Economic performance is measured through figures, and those figures are publicly available. So every time I listen to Thabo Mbeki speak, I enjoy listening to him because of the depth, structure and intellectual discipline of the way he makes his arguments.

Last night in Kawangware, I met this man whom I initially thought was a security guard. After speaking with him, I later came to learn that he is a Nigerian national currently living on the streets. Whenever I meet someone living on the streets, I always take time to engage with them, understand their story, and learn how they ended up there. My goal is always to see how best I can help them rebuild their lives. During our conversation, he shared that he came to Kenya after receiving a promise of sponsorship from his cousin to continue his education here. However, after only two weeks in the country, his cousin who had promised to support him left for the United States without enrolling him in school, leaving him stranded in Kenya. As we continued talking, he explained how he struggled to survive and eventually ended up living on the streets. He has now been on the streets for about two years. In one of the videos I recorded, a lady reached out to me and said she recognized him. According to her, they once lived in the same apartment building. She narrated how the man had been in a relationship with a lady who allegedly took everything he owned. This incident deeply affected him, pushing him into depression and eventually to the streets. The man also shared that at one point he worked in Dubai, where he used to send money back home to support his parents in Nigeria. However, when he later returned home, he claims he discovered that he had been deceived by the very people he trusted. He gave me his parents’ contact, although we were not able to fully hear their side of the story. Currently, his travel documents have expired, and he expressed that his biggest wish is to renew them so that he can return home to Nigeria and start life again. I offered to use my platform to help fundraise for the renewal of his documents, as he personally requested. He also asked if I could help him secure any form of work so that he could at least sustain himself as he waits to regularize his documents. However, after spending time with him and assessing his situation, it became clear to me that he urgently needs mental health support, as he appears to be struggling with depression. I therefore decided that the following morning I would take him to a private rehabilitation center where professionals could assess him and offer the help he needs. After we agreed on this plan, I took him to a hotel where he could spend the night safely. I paid for his room and food, intending to pick him up the following morning and take him for rehabilitation. Unfortunately, later in the morning I received a call from the hotel attendant informing me that although the man had slept well, he left the guest house very early in a hurry. Later reports indicated that he had been seen back on the streets. Since then, efforts to locate and rescue him have not been successful. I am informed that he rarely accepts help from people, which makes the situation even more challenging.
