In 1982 the Nigerian Air Force ordered 18 of these. By 1984 they began arriving in Nigeria, to be operated out of the NAF base in Makurdi. It remains the only twin engine supersonic fighter ever procured by the NAF. They were to complement the NAF fleet of 45 MiG-21 fighters (21 MiG-21 MF aquired in 1975 and another 15 MiG-21bis in 1984.) Nigeria had faced a Chadian invasion just a year earlier in April 1983, where the MiG-21s played a prominent role in expelling the invading Chadian forces. After this the NAF saw the need to maintain sufficient fighter capacity and account for wartime attrition. The result, the most expansive fighter fleet in NAF history.

PRESS RELEASE NAF STRIKES TERRORISTS, RAZES ABASU AIKI HIDEOUT IN KATSINA The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA Sector 2, has delivered a decisive blow to terrorist elements in the North-West, destroying a notorious hideout linked to kingpin Abasu Aiki during a precision air strike in Katsina State. The operation, conducted on 1 May 2026, targeted a terrorist enclave within the Dan-Aji Forest in Faskari Local Government Area, following sustained and credible intelligence reports indicating renewed terrorist activity in the area. Further intelligence confirmed that the location served as a logistics hub and transit point for fighters loyal to Abasu Aiki, who have been implicated in repeated attacks on communities and security forces across the Faskari, Kankara, and Funtua axis of Katsina State. Acting on this intelligence, NAF air assets identified armed terrorists on motorcycles alongside other fighters within the enclave and executed a swift and coordinated strike on both the terrorists and their support structures. Battle Damage Assessment confirmed that several terrorists were neutralised, while the logistics hub and associated structures were destroyed, triggering explosions and widespread fires. The successful operation significantly disrupts terrorist movement and resupply within the area and underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s sustained resolve to deny terrorists safe havens, dismantle their operational networks, and support ongoing efforts to restore peace and security across the region. NAF ENGINEERS DEMONSTRATE EXCEPTIONAL EXPERTISE BY REVIVING AIRCRAFT GROUNDED FOR 23 YEARS In a phenomenal display of engineering ingenuity, aircraft engineers and technicians of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have accomplished the remarkable feat of reactivating a Dornier DO-228 aircraft, which had been grounded for 23 years. This achievement underscores NAF’s growing capacity for indigenous maintenance to bolster its operational readiness, whilst contributing to Nigeria’s inherent aviation capabilities. The aircraft, originally designated "5N-MPS" and operated by the now defunct Ministry of Mines, Power, and Steel, had been grounded at the DANA facility in Kaduna since 2001. However, sequel to a Presidential Directive for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to transfer such grounded platforms to the NAF for evaluation and possible reactivation, the NAF initiated this project. The NAF took on the challenge of reactivating this aircraft, a Dash 201 Series with only 1,081 flight hours since new, considering the task a unique opportunity to restore a valuable national asset. The reactivation process, for the grounded aircraft - redesignated “NAF-039” - was conducted between June and September 2024, involving meticulous planning and painstaking execution by a crack team of 5 engineering officers and 40 technicians from the NAF 431 Engineering Group (Engr Gp), Kaduna. This accomplishment, which required the application of advanced engineering techniques and adherence to stringent aviation standards, attests to the NAF’s growing technical expertise and resolute determination. The success of this project carries significant strategic implications, bearing in mind that, beyond enhancing the NAF’s fleet, it symbolises the Service’s resolve to achieve self-reliance in aviation maintenance for operational effectiveness. It also serves as a morale booster for the NAF engineers and technicians, showcasing their ability to undertake complex projects which otherwise would be outsourced to foreign entities. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, lauded the 431 Engr Gp for their dedication, and emphasised the broader import of the achievement. He noted that the project reflects NAF’s resolve to optimise resources, strengthen its fleet, and uphold national security through operational excellence. “The successful reactivation of NAF 039 is not just an operational gain; it is a statement of our capabilities and our commitment to self-reliance,” he added. Significantly, this accomplishment builds upon the NAF’s earlier successes, such as the conduct of the first in-country 4,800-hour inspection on another DO-228 aircraft in January 2024.
