Robbie Robertson shares a memory of writing “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” in this clip from the documentary “Classic Albums: The Band.” Then he softly and tenderly sings the first verse while accompanying himself on piano. Beautiful.

Levon Helm giving everything he had for "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." You can hear the pure intensity in his voice and drumming in this electric clip from The Last Waltz. 🥁 What is your favorite performance from the film? #LastWaltzWeek

Farewell, to one of Canada’s finest. Was introduced to that rock blues voice on ‘Somewhere Down The Crazy River’… then discovered ‘The Weight’, ‘The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down’ and the brilliant back-catalogue of The Band. RIP Robbie Robertson. 💔

"One of the last true great spirits" – Bob Dylan Today we remember Levon Helm, whose voice and rhythm were the heart of The Band. No one played and sang quite like him. Here he is pouring his soul into "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" at The Last Waltz. 🎶

Joan Baez was a super-lefty folk singer in the 1960s, said to have been one of MLK's many lovers. In 1971, her staunchly pro-Confederate "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"—here with war photos—was a hit single. You could be lefty AND pro-Confederate. Impossible today.

"Possibly the most moving song about the tragedy of the American Civil War, sung by a son of the South but written by a Jewish/Native American from Canada with a rare gift indeed." The Band performing 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' live at Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, The Last Waltz.
