An extra £500 million in benefit cuts is expected to be confirmed by the Chancellor in her Spring Statement today. It is understood that the Office for Budget Responsibility has concluded the benefit reforms already announced will only save £3.4 billion, rather than the £5 billion claimed. Spending cuts across government departments will be outlined by the Chancellor later, as she tries to fill a £15 billion black hole in the economy without putting up taxes.
