The notion that AI will enable non-professional developers to take professional jobs is bullshit. Here are my thoughts. Am I thinking about this the right way?

100%. You need background, you need grounding. I’m doing things with code and data that I never dreamt possible back in the lab…but it does not make me a developer. It makes me a user of tokens on Replit ;)

"user of tokens" - that's a good way to put it :)

Depends. There will be more devs in general since learning to code/build is much easier now. So yes, some of these people might eventually take jobs from experienced devs if they manage to professionalize their new skills. The experienced devs have to make their advantage count.

It seems you are saying that if new developers become professionals they will take jobs from professional developers that stay behind. yes.

Every time I’ve used an AI tool to code I’ve had to understand it to modify it or customize it for that last 10-20%. Same for anytime I use it to help me write or anything else. It’s been an accelerator for my existing work but never a replacement.

AI let’s the developers dream big and also give more time to think about a wider business problem 💪

When people got access automotive scanning tools did they automatically become elite mechanics?

Different take. I’m not a developer, I’m a scientist. Not many developers make tools that cellular and molecular higher education scientists use (that doesn’t have huge enterprise cost like Cayuse). I have been making stand alone tools using and putting a few huggingface elements together for internal use. This isn’t going to be sold or fully developed but will save our lab quite a bit of federal funding. I’m also able to run inference on our university cluster so patient data stays onsite and we don’t have cloud compute costs. Because of the tools I’ve used to automate many operation and research administration elements, I find myself the new ‘systems integration manager’. I am not a developer or worked with software professionally, I am a scientist.

I’m leveraging AI to build things much faster. I’m replacing third party apps with my own code because of AI

Sounds right to me! increases the clock speed for everyone. Speed to get more done for those that already know. speed to learn for those that are new.
