After the attack, President Lyndon B Johnson leaked to Newsweek that, "the Israelis deliberately attacked the USS Liberty because they felt we were collecting intelligence against them, about the 6 day war with Egypt." The Israelis threatened LBJ with smears of 'blood libel' and 'antisemitism' and promised to end his political career if he did not keep his mouth shut. Both he and the NSA remained silent about the Liberty.
