Q: James Cameron filmed Oppenheimer all in IMAX and FULL SCREEN. Are you doing that or only select scenes? #Rajamouli: “I would like to do the entire film in IMAX but we are not STUDIO BACKED, so it would be IMPOSSIBLE for us to DO ENTIRE FILM IN IMAX.”

Hoyte van Hoytema has explained it as essentially a limitation of IMAX. You have to center punch because the screen is so big and the viewer’s eyes can’t jump around it. It works in so many other formats *because* it’s shot with IMAX in mind, so nothing is lost at the edges.

Apple Vision Pro takes Mac gaming to another level 🎮 You can game on an ultrawide OLED monitor of any size, place it anywhere, even on the ceiling. Or on a massive IMAX screen in a dark theater, or on the moon. That’s a futuristic experience.

#ลีน่าหมิว #LenaMiu 🦋: I feel it’s an episode that should be watched the most. 🧸: it shows the cuteness of Parn and Pheem, where they fell in love, the start of the sparks, and the start of the feeling of ‘hey, I really like this woman’ and ‘hey, you really like this woman’. 🦋: and the important thing is that you get to see the trauma for both of the characters from their personal lives. Like why do both of the characters think this way and what’s the trauma. There’s a backstory to the characters, which will give it more weight/depth in the later episodes. 🦋: we’re very happy that everyone/fans want to come and watch us in the first ep. We also wanted everyone to come and watch with us on the big screen. 🧸: yes, we’re very happy to see the fans. The last time was our first time, so we were nervous (excited nervous) and it was a bit scary. But since this one is now our second series together, I feel like it’s going to be more fun because we now know what it’s like to watch it with the fans – it’s like being at a boxing match and cheering. And for this series, P’Lena also said that it’s going to feel more like we’re cheering at a boxing match than the last series. 🦋: to be real with you, it’s gonna make you shy/blush because the scenes in the series are like…give you goosebumps and especially having to watch it on the big screen, it makes the viewers feel it more. It really hits different. 🧸: just with this small screen, we’re screaming our heads off in the room, and just imagine how many inches the screen is that we’re going to watch it on!

Christopher Nolan convinced IMAX engineers to completely redesign their cameras just so he could film The Odyssey. "I called my friends at IMAX and I said, 'If ever we're going to make a film entirely in IMAX, this is The Odyssey. So, can you find a way to alleviate the limiting factor?'" "The limiting factor being the cameras are extremely loud." "We've never been able to capture dramatic scenes with an IMAX camera." "What they did is they came up with a way of blimping the camera." "Essentially a high-tech box that you put the camera into and it silences it." "It let us, for the first time ever, get the quiet scenes... and therefore be able to do the whole film."

The IMAX prologue for THE DARK KNIGHT still sends chills down my spine. I’ll never forget watching this in front of I AM LEGEND. When the first frame hits in 1.43, the entire audience gasped. Still the best opening to any superhero movie ever.

Some things you just have to experience for yourself. 👀 See THE ODYSSEY in IMAX at AMC, then text the friend who's still asking, "What's so special?" Trust us—they'll get it the second the screen lights up and the sound kicks in.

The hype and aura culmination was so great it had me on the edge of my bed the whole time with my phone screen covering my entire peripheral vision. Kei's Blinding Light attack in Aris' fashion was simply the best way it could have been done. Peak Archive, thank you John Nexon

I am not a fan of IMAX. I don't think it does anything. It's just a bigger screen. In a damn box ratio. Blown up television. Give me Cinemascope any day of the week. Just make a big IMAX screen and add the sides. It's only a box because of the limitation of that antiquated film format running through a camera gate that can barely take the stress. Most of that stuff isnt even shot in IMAX but "FOR IMAX." Which is just digital cameras like Venice 2 or Alexa 65. This fluctuating presentation format is also ridiculous. Do we believe that compositions matter? So you're telling me a filmnaker supposedly cares about every little detail about presentation but then doesn't care that vast majority of the movie will be played in theaters in some compromised cropping? I'd rather lock the image in a very specific format and make sure everyone sees it according to my intended compositions with edits calibrated to that eye tracking. The irony is there's nothing more dismissive of cinema than the idea that fluctuating compositions due to format presentation don't matter, whether it's IMAX or iPhone.

Christopher Nolan says The Odyssey is a promise he made to himself at 16, watching a volcano documentary in a dome-screen IMAX in Chicago. Christopher Nolan: "Going to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago when I was 16 years old, seeing a documentary about volcanoes in the OmniMax format, and thinking... why on earth isn't Hollywood using this format? I always wanted to be a director. If I ever got the chance, could I shoot a film in this way?" Christopher Nolan: "I called my friends at IMAX and said, look... if ever we're going to make a film entirely on IMAX, this is The Odyssey. This is the one. Can you find a way to alleviate the limiting factor? The cameras are extremely loud." Christopher Nolan: "What they did is they came up with a way of blimping the camera... a high-tech box that silences it. The thing weighed about 300 pounds. But it let us, for the first time ever, get the quiet scenes, the dramatic scenes, and therefore do the whole film."

The IMAX film I worked on last year, DEEP SKY, is getting a wide release to 300 theaters for Earth Day. If you missed the first theater run, now's your chance to bask in giant images from JWST and to see my stuff on the the big screen :) tix:

UV Vamsi build a first of its kind theatre in Sullurpet. It inspired me. Next, a big industrialist friend asked me for four tickets of Mission Impossible 7 for big screen of Prasad’s. That’s when I understood the kind of craze large screen formats have among gen Z. Which is why we brought Dolby Cinema to Hyderabad through Allu Cinema’s. - Allu Aravind

With the Apple Vision Pro, you don’t feel like you’re sitting in economy class. It’s like being in my entertainment room or a cinema! Plus, the airplane entertainment screen is so outdated. I’m grateful for the invention of the #AppleVisionPro Thanks Tim Cook #SpatialComputing

Since IMAX has been a major topic of conversation lately with ‘The Odyssey’ being in theaters, now’s a fitting time to share a little bit of IMAX lore. For ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ the arena sequences were shot with IMAX cameras, so if you watch the movie on a standard Blu-ray, as Katniss enters the arena, the film’s aspect ratio will change from a standard 2.40:1 aspect ratio, to a full 1.78:1 ratio to fill the entire screen for the rest of the movie. You can’t watch the movie this way on streaming or digital platforms. Another reason why preserving physical media is important.
