The Office turned 25 yesterday and the timeline is full of memories and clips. It’s still my all-time favourite comedy, a genuine masterpiece from Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant. It hasn’t aged a day. The writing, the cringe, the painfully relatable characters… it feels as fresh and sharp today as it did in 2001. Of all the iconic episodes, S1E4 “Training” might be my absolute favourite. Everything clicks, but nothing tops David Brent completely taking over the customer service role-play. Brent as the world’s worst hotel manager is comedy perfection. The highlights: “I think you’ll care when I tell you what the complaint is… I THINK THERE’S BEEN A R**E UP THERE!” 😂 “I got his attention. Get their attention.” And the classic closer: “What room are you in?” “362.” “There is no 362 in this hotel… sometimes the complaints will be false.” 😭 The way he derails the entire training session just to be the centre of attention is classic Brent. Hilarious, awkward, and somehow still oddly charming. If you haven’t rewatched it lately, do yourself a favour.

In this clip from the series, he’s out on the street pretending to gather answers for Family Fortunes. He approaches members of the public with a clipboard and asks them the usual “we surveyed 100 people” style questions, except these are very much not the family-friendly ones you’d hear on the actual game show. 🤣 “The most annoying thing about the French?” “Something you’d steal from a lonely old woman?”
