![“It ruptured my entire understanding of my own country.” Charlie Peters was 18 when he first encountered the story that has shaken Great Britain to the core. A government report had just landed, revealing something unimaginable. “It literally took me out of the sort of medieval cloisters I was studying in, and brought the real world to my front door via the front page of The Times [of London] newspaper.” The 2014 report by Professor Alexis Jay documented unspeakable crimes committed over more than a decade in the Yorkshire town of Rotherham. “Over 1,400 children, most of them girls, most of them white,” he said, “had been systematically exploited, abused, trafficked, in some cases tortured, in the most barbarous and heinous abuse imaginable.” But what shocked Peters was not only the horror — it was the silence. “Actually, the abuse had gone on for much longer.” The case, he says, was not just about Rotherham. “It wasn’t just Rotherham and a handful of northern towns and cities. This was a truly national crisis.” Peters grew up in Surrey, “which… I suppose is like the Connecticut of England.” His was “a very beautiful, luxurious, safe and healthy, happy childhood.” Jay’s report changed everything. “It changed the course of my life, that report. It made me realise I wanted to be a journalist.” Peters joined the army, did counter-terrorism work, then returned to reporting. “This issue of Rotherham kept bugging me in the back of my head. That was always the reason why I wanted to go into this trade.” In 2022, he and fellow reporter Guy Dampier took time off, scraped together £500, and drove north. “We filmed some interviews, we gathered some exclusive, never-before-heard-or-seen stories about the crisis.” They shopped the footage to media outlets. “We did have some extremely powerful information… But nobody was interested in making the film or engaging with us whatsoever.” Nobody, except one. “GB News did… they hired us to make the film.” What they uncovered, Peters says, “had to be done.” What they revealed: “Over 50 different towns and cities affected by this scandal.” The pattern, he says, dated back to “the mid of the 1960s.” After Britain built a dam in Mirpur, Pakistan, “hundreds of thousands of people were suddenly homeless and many of them moved to Britain.” In northern England’s textile towns — “Blackburn, Bradford, Sheffield, Rotherham, Rochdale” — a new pattern emerged. “We first get these reports of this kind of abuse where Pakistani men were targeting schoolgirls—English schoolgirls—often outside school gates in groups.” “It is a very specific form of exploitation… They would make the children… feel as though they were special.” And the victims? “Often between 10 and 16 — that was a very specific pubescent age range.” “This pattern of abuse was going on for a long time,” Peters says, “but it didn’t really break into the mainstream because people were terrified about this issue.” When Labour MP Ann Cryer raised concerns in the early 2000s, “she was derided as a racist by senior members of her own party. They told her to shut up, essentially for the sake of diversity.” Investigative journalist Andrew Norfolk, who helped expose the scandal, faced similar resistance. “Rotherham Council described [his reports] as the lies of the Murdoch press.” But in 2014, Jay’s official inquiry vindicated Norfolk — and opened the door to wider investigations. “That’s when this issue has erupted into national focus.” Peters’ reporting reveals a staggering fact: in many cases, the British state targeted victims rather than abusers. “One case… a police officer finding a girl inside a car—this is a young girl, 13, 14 — being abused by several men — let these men leave and told her parents what she’d been doing as if it was her fault.” ...
