why would anyone do all that just to do basic addition omg-

i tried this out and it seems to work really well

You learned this when you were in school - you just don't remember. Using concrete models for understand abstract mathematical concepts (such as regrouping) is nothing new. Y'all just love to fuss about education.

That’s just very unnecessarily complicated 😭

Until it’s time to add 633862014 + 3775692 with new age math

The “new math” is math inclusive of retards who can’t do basic base 10 arithmetic in their head.

The way I stopped listening to this kid and just let the video play. The old way is superior. What do you mean I have to draw a table and make tiny blades of grass and pebbles to solve a math problem? GET OUT!!

This kid is mimicking number blocks. He needs to be able to visualize what it means to ‘add’ something, and once he’s able to do that, he can move on without the need of drawing the blocks to stay on track. For his age, he’s doing good!

Even in math they have to do it so extra...

It’s not crazy. It’s stupid. School is intentionally making kids dumber now.

It's foundational learning - the kids need it. Children's cognitive ability doesn't grow strong if they learn everything through short cuts.

In the amount of time he took to solve that simple a** equation out with a whole T-Chart, I could’ve used the “old” method to solve the problem 10 more times while he was taking time doing all that. Smh, very inefficient method.

Kid thought he did some revolutionary💀

The woman doesn't show your work tho. 7+6=13 why? Because you memorized it or visualized in your head. The boy makes seven marks and six marks and counts them to 13. What's the big deal?

“Oh, we’re breaking it down and making it more visual and easier for them” Fast forward to them needing to take Calculus to graduate, and you see them drawing dots…they’re cooked

* we are just overcomplicating this for no reason 😑

maybe just do it w ur head it isn’t hard

Took him 20x as long to do.

Why they making him draw this out? I remember using these awful things and I hated it. Now they are doing the same thing but making him draw the units instead of actually having them physically there

It’s a terrible way of doing math. You don’t get to put tallies in boxes in your head. Not only that it removes your ability to visualize the numbers as independent objects and instead you would imagine them as lines. It’s just too confusing to keep track of. I don’t understand why we are teaching our kids to do math like that.

“This wants to be with its friends”

I’ve had some anger management issues regarding this topic.

Girl, they had to hold assembly at my kids school to try to teach us this way on how to do that math. I still never got that shit. I do it the old way and that’s how I taught my kids. I don’t know why they just changed it all of a sudden.

Man if this is for basic addition id hate to see algebra or calculus😬😬😬

I’m so glad Im a millennial.. cuz wtf they got these babies out here doing 🥴🥴 who got time to be doing all that 🤦🏽♂️😂😂

They're making smart kids into idiots.

The best part is they have NO TEXTBOOKS so if you don't watch some YouTube videos on how to teach them the way they learned, no one is solving the problem and "I hate math" comes to live in your household. I still don't understand why they do speed quizzes & then teach this mess.

The US is currently 34th in Math and Science in the whole world. Just like to point that out.

This is why they got rid of the department of education, homeschool your kids

I heard a middle school teacher say “we don’t do mental math.” I know she meant you won’t simply memorize you will learn how to arrive to the answer. However, Addition and multiplication fact memorization is a must. Learn both

According to developmental psychology at that age they need something concrete for it to make sense. They can’t use abstract thinking. So it might be easier for kids to understand it that way

This seems like so much more work… they just trying to waste time at school…

You might as well count on your fingers with the amount of time that took

This made me more confused with the original way 🤨🤨

Honestly teaching the kids to break things down like this will help them be able to do math like this in their head. Eventually the kid will do that bracket in his head and it’s scaleable
