He said: I went to take the soul of a man whom I found telling a shoemaker, ‘Make the shoes well so they will last me a whole year.’ I laughed, and I took his soul before he could even wear them. Allah said: And what made you cry? He said: I cried when You commanded me to take the soul of a woman. I went to her and found her alone in a barren desert, giving birth to her child. I waited until she delivered her baby in that empty wasteland, then I took her soul while her child was crying helplessly, with no one around to care for him. Allah said: “And what terrified you? He said: I was terrified when You ordered me to take the soul of a great scholar among Your scholars. I found light emerging from his room, and every time I approached, the light pushed me back. I was frightened by that light even as I took his soul. Allah said: Do you know who that man was? He said: It was that same baby whose mother’s soul you took and left in the desert. I raised him Myself and did not leave him to anyone else.
