Ursula von der Leyen announced yesterday that the EU will introduce a new mandatory EU age verification app for social media. The new law proposal will be presented after the summer. People creating new social media accounts will have to prove that they are above a certain age as the plans are to introduce social media bans for young people. Users will need a passport, ID card or digital ID to generate “over X age” proofs for platforms. For now, it seems that it will target new accounts but some are also pushing for retroactive ID requirement to verify already existing social media accounts.

If the obscene viral video of Bhagwant Mann is fake why did the govt dither to get it verified from a forensic lab like the then Governor Punjab had gotten there sex tape of Minister Kattaruchak verified from a forensic lab of Chandigarh? I’m surprised that even the Mohali court ordered the removal of said video from social media sites without its appropriate verification which has only further confused the people. Verification of the said video is vital as it relates to the Chief Minister and even an iota of doubt will only tarnish the image of Punjabi’s and Sikhs worldwide ! Members of Congress use ID and a secure system to cast votes because high-stakes decisions require identity verification and an auditable record. That’s standard practice when power is on the line. Public elections are upstream of all that power. They decide who gets to sit in those seats and press those buttons. If identity verification is normal for lawmakers, it should be normal for the elections that put them in office.
