The OpenAI API team has been cooking. Launching today in the Responses API: MCP, image gen, code interpreter, and background mode, delivering an absurd amount of functionality in the span of just one API call 🧑‍🍳

First, MCP. We’ve been really excited about MCP since it launched and it’s so good to see it land in the API. MCP allows you to connect your app with tons and tons of remote functionality from Stripe, Shopify, Cloudflare, and many more.

Image gen. Y’all have been ~enthusiastic~ about using the new image model in the API, so we're bringing it to /v1/responses. The image gen tool in Responses preserves much more detail between turns, and our models are really good at using it with tools like web search!

Code Interpreter. We’ve reimagined this tool and shipped it with a new resource, Containers, that lets you manage exactly what data the model has access to, and allow it to write and execute code in a sandboxed environment.

And finally: background mode. As workflows get more complex, the models may spin on a given task for 10s of minutes. Background mode allows you to run these jobs async so you don't have to hold open a persistent connection. Just add background: true to enable.
