This is truly unjust and heartbreaking. Thousands of Afghan refugees families across Pakistan have been stranded for the past three weeks in Jamrud, Khyber near Torkham gate and on GT Road in Azakhel. They arrived with loaded trucks, hoping to return home, but after the recent AfPak crisis, the Torkham was closed. One refugee sent me a video pleading, “For God’s sake, let us go back to Afghanistan.” These poor Afghans have nothing to do with AfPak politics, yet they are suffering the consequences.

This is truly unjust and heartbreaking. Five years of Taliban rule have pushed Afghanistan to the brink of collapse. This is not Gaza under bombardment or Ukraine under missile and drone attacks. This is Afghanistan—where thousands of young men and families are fleeing because repression, economic hardship, and the loss of hope have left them believing they have no future at home. There is no more time for debate. This week, the Taliban announced that it is resuming public stoning of women as a death sentence. I have raised the alarm for three years that this day was inevitable. Afghan women will not be the scapegoat for the failure of international diplomacy. They expect fundamental human rights to be protected and that any engagement with the Taliban ensures women’s prosperity and protections. The entrenchment of gender apartheid as a prosecutable offence in international law is a first step. We must not return to the horrors of their first regime. The Taliban never changed - they tricked the world.

Successive governments have made promises but failed to act. Kashmir is not a bilateral dispute — it is an international issue rooted in international law, and the UK must have the moral courage to recognise that and uphold its obligations. Kashmiris deserve justice, dignity and the right to decide their own future.
