Trent ran his contract down. When you think of Alexi McAllister signing on a 1 year extension at Brighton so they could get a better figure. Rice too at West Ham. Trent instigated his departure a few years before and knew how attractive he'd be to Madrid for free

Trent lied for 2 years that he was negotiating a new contract while learning Spanish and talking to Madrid about a deal. Jones said openly he wants to leave a year before his deal ended allowing the club to get a small fee. So the big difference is honesty.
