This accidentally makes a great argument for the Remake trilogy. FFVII was always a game where serious themes, emotional drama and completely ridiculous shit existed side by side. Yet whenever Rebirth does the latter, you treat it like Square suddenly forgot what FFVII was.

Yes, these scenes are tonally different. That wasn’t my argument. FFVII as a whole always juxtaposed serious drama with absurd comedy. “Rebirth takes it further” is a valid criticism. “This isn’t FFVII” is not the same claim

That analogy doesn’t really address what I said. Three selectively compared scenes don’t establish that Rebirth suddenly abandoned FFVII’s identity. The original could go from Corel’s tragedy to Gold Saucer, Dyne’s death to a Chocobo race, Aerith’s death to snowboarding or Wall Market’s dress/squat comedy during a serious Shinra/Avalanche storyline. Even the Nibelheim flashback lets Cloud snoop through Tifa’s room and steal her underwear in the middle of one of the darkest parts of the story. Oh, and can’t forget the iconic Scarlet & Tifa slap fight. Serious drama and absurdity existing side by side is part of FFVII’s DNA. Rebirth pushing that contrast further is fair to criticize. Saying this literally “isn’t Final Fantasy VII” ignores just how tonally weird and goofy the original already was

There’s no “goofiness threshold” where FFVII suddenly stops being FFVII. If the argument is that Rebirth changed the tonal balance too much for you, cool. That’s an actual criticism. But your personal threshold still doesn’t turn “this feels less like FFVII to me” into “this literally isn’t FFVII.” Especially when we’re still following Cloud and the same party through the same world, pursuing Sephiroth, fighting Shinra and Jenova, dealing with the Lifestream, Cetra, Black Materia and the Planet, while revisiting the same locations, relationships, character arcs and major story beats. All of those things contribute to what makes FFVII, FFVII. If all of that can remain recognizably FFVII, yet some extra dance numbers are enough to make it “not FFVII,” then those tonal changes are one difference in FFVII’s identity, not evidence that the identity itself is gone.

The original wasn't afraid to let something be serious. I think the worst change in Rebirth is definitely the cat lady in the rebuilt version of Cloud's childhood home. There's a constant forced message in the trilogy that deep down everyone is a good person no matter what. She's supposed to be a freak that helps cover up the Nibelheim incident and basically gets paid by Shinra to just take up space there. All this shit about how they operate a nursing home just excuses how fucked up they are. Not something I thought about much since playing Rebirth when it released.

The worst crime of the R Trilogy is that they are afraid to leave a moment sit and be serious for more than five minutes without a joke because they think thier audience has the attention span of a goldfish.
