This is a great example of something that has to be seen to be believed, and I’m not even talking about the eagles’ amazing aerodynamic abilities. I’m referring to chaotic tidal rapids that cause huge vortexes of water to push fish to the surface. You can clearly see one starting right when the eagle plucks the fish from the surface. The poor fish was rushed to the surface at such a velocity that the air and gases inside it expanded filling it like a balloon. Glad I’m not a fish.

The word is a portmanteau combining "Mediterranean" and "hurricane." The Mediterranean is too small to support barotropic (tropical cyclones) the scale of conventional hurricanes AND is too far north to support a truly tropical cyclone anyway. Moreover, water temperatures are too cool. (Most tropical cyclones exist over sea surface temperatures of 78 degrees or warmer; the current water temperature off the coast of Libya is about 63 degrees.) Medicanes can and occasionally do reach hurricane strength. The strongest on record was Medicane Ianos, which impacted Greece between September 17-18, 2020. Additionally, that gigawatt of heat may be hotter than surface seawater normally used for OTEC, allowing for much shallower piping (200m instead of 1000m) while also being more efficient. The availability of unlimited cold water for the condenser is the key factor we can’t replicate on land. This brings the potential energy generation for ocean based compute up from 10 terawatts to potentially thousands of terawatts, as the locations are not limited to areas with the warmest surface waters. The excess energy needed for hundreds or thousands of people to also live on these structures is minimal compared to that needed for compute.
