We asked Emmett Shear (fmr CEO of Twitch, now founder of Softmax) what’s really happening when an AI writes poetry. "These LLM's are pretrained on semantics. They write poetry the way babies draw breath and scream." There’s no one there writing the poem, there can’t be a self, because it hasn’t observed the existence of a self. And yet, it writes poetry." "It moves in semantic space the way babies move in physics space. The thing I encourage everyone to be equally confused about is: if it simulates an agent writing poetry... is there something it feels like to be that agent?" "We become the masks we wear. If it did this long enough, and experienced enough, it would be a poet. But it never gets the chance to learn itself as a poet."
