We're coming from an era of maximum globalization. Sanctions are rules that roll back this globalization and are thus subject to lots of interference from Western companies. Western governments need to shut down this lobbying. They failed to do that properly on Russia sanctions.

There's something much bigger at play than just Russia's terrible invasion of Ukraine. Sanctions are supposed to deter other aggressors - think of China and Taiwan. Sanctions can be highly effective, but we need to urgently learn the right lessons from our experience on Russia...

@BrookingsInst All I want from you Robin is an example of sanctions on commodities actually working (over an extended period) just ONE time in history. Price caps & trade controls have been tried MANY times going all the way back to Rome's Diocletian. I'm looking for ONE case you can point to.

@BrookingsInst Interestingly, you have provided many arguments for why sanctions in Russia have yet to accomplish any formulated objectives. Looking at the data of previous sanction regimes, I find little confidence in their effectiveness in bringing about stated policy objectives.

President Trump said on Sunday he is willing to impose sanctions on Russia, but Europe has to act in a way that is commensurate with the United States. "Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don't want them to buy oil," Trump said. "The sanctions that they're putting on are not tough enough, and I'm willing to do sanctions, but they're going to have to toughen up."

We should provide Ukraine weapons they need, allow them to strike deep into Russia, push war onto Russian territory, and put greater pressure on Putin at home. We need to seal holes in sanctions regime, restore lifted sanctions on Russian energy, and impose additional sanctions on Russia. On the military side, we should provide Ukraine with weapons they need, including long-range weapons. And not just provide those weapons, but also give them the ability to strike deep into Russia.

Bernie Sanders has now officially joined AOCIA in adopting the most deranged and insane position of all: He admits it's a genocide, but he still vows to forever arm and fund it, give them "defensive arms" which includes all the tanks and jets and missile systems, while also opposing sanctions. That's utterly insane. That's completely deranged. Bernie Sanders and AOCIA both support a full total arms embargo and sanctions on Russia, but for a regime they now have been forced to admit is committing genocide with US arms and funds, they won't even support an arms embargo and sanctions. That's like saying: The Nazis are doing the Holocaust and that's bad, but we can't impose an arms embargo and sanctions on them, that's crazy. No, we need to just temporarily pause less than 1% of "offensive arms" and give them all the "defensive arms" they need to continue the Holocaust and also if you even suggest imposing economic sanctions on Nazi Germany you're clearly deranged.

And President Trump has instructed me that if we need to, we will go to a 10 with sanctions to bring president Putin to the table. But I'm optimistic that he will be able to get him to the table without increasing the sanctions. But all options are on the table to increase and go to maximum energy sanctions on Russia if needed."
